Some time ago I had the great pleasure and the honor to organize and create an excellent five-day photographic workshop in Epirus along with many of my student photographers back here in Athens. The main area that we were going to get to know and photograph was the large complex of traditional villages near Ioannina, called Zagorohoria and all that surrounds and includes this vast and beautiful mountainous area of Greece.
Following the basic theoretical direction of travel photography and landscape, as well as the detailed study of the season and the autumn color, the program included a variety of excursions and different photographic techniques, starting with simple composition lessons and instructions about natural light, passing on key issues of using and exploiting the photographic equipment and ending with demanding applications of night photography and astrophotography. The mission route was mainly focused in Central and Western Zagori, taking pictures at all major points of interest.
The seminar took a significant role in architectural photography and in villages such as Monodendri and Papigo, mainly in mountain landscape photography, emphasizing at the impressive gorge of Vikos, nature photography (rivers, birds and animals) as well as the old and rare stone bridges of the area. Through the many variations in landscape morphology combined with day-long excursions and a wealth of lighting conditions, photographers have had the opportunity and the ability to feel the charm, magic and also fatigue of a professional photographic mission like this one. It was really a photographic experience that we will all remember for a very long time…
